Lighthouses

This is a very good presentation of lighthouses
This disc gives you one of two options, you can either play it with just background music, the imagery and natural sounds of the water and coast.

The second option is to hear a short narrative of the lighthouses and their beginnings. I, myself, put this on, watched it and it was so soothing to see, I let it play on loop the entire night and slept so sound to the sounds of the waves crashing, the natural sounds of the wildlife there and the music.

It is a well done visionary presentation.

Ocean Monk

A Loving Tribute
This is a tribute to a grue who practiced surfing as part of his spiritual practice, and taught and supported his followers who are also surfers turned monks. The need to practice mindfulness while surfing makes total sense. Mindfulness being a huge part of the eastern spiritual life. I am not an avid surfer, or a monk, however I enjoyed the tribute.

Planet Ocean

Filmed for the whole world, with love.
I was shocked at some of the low scores this film was getting here, so I felt compelled to voice my opinion and debate some of the complaints I'd read:

Some people felt this film was too depressing or that the science was too basic, but Planet Ocean was crafted to define and showcase the severity of our marine situation. If you viewed the bonus, making-of features, the director explained that he is trying to boost awareness, and educate people from around the world. Many of whom, haven't heard the concerns of climate control or pollution before, like we have. Many people around just don't realize what is at stake. The footage is beautiful and sometimes terrifying, but that keeps even the least scientific-minded among us from changing the channel. This wasn't meant to be "Blue Planet II."

A few complained about that jab on religion, spoken in the film's closing. It is not meant to be offensive or to convert you to a different spiritual view, except to point out...

Great documentary...beautiful put together
I really enjoyed this documentary and found it very informative and interesting. I read some of the reviews here and I can't believe some are calling it 'anti-religious'? Did I miss something? Because I did not get that Impression at all. I think some people are so touchy just because they showed a statue of jesus in Rio De Jenaro. I really don't understand some people's views or way of thinking. The man who narrated this Josh Duhamel happens to be very religious and is catholic (like me). I am considering buying this DVD after renting it from Netflix.

Visually Beautiful and Powerful Message
I'm sure some of my regular readers are scratching their heads right now, wondering why in the world I'm reviewing a documentary about the ocean. I mean, my blog is a genre-focused site, so this is a bit out of the norm. Let's just say that this film is so good and the message so pertinent that I simply had to share it. PLANET OCEAN is an excellent documentary, and I recommend giving it a look.

I love all things that have to deal with the ocean, which is one of the reasons I wanted to review PLANET OCEAN so much. I am particularly fond of being underwater as well, so documentaries on undersea life are sort of a guilty pleasure for me. If you follow my blog, you know that my primary focuses are horror, sci-fi, and fantasy...but, my guilty pleasure sometimes takes precedence and, well, here we are.

The fine folks at Universal were kind enough to send me a Blu-ray version of this film as well, so I had the privilege of seeing it in HD. If you want a good way...

Sexy Evil Genius [HD]

Great ensemble cast brings to life Scott Lew's clever story
Scott Lew, a talented writer/director afflicted by Lou Gehrig's disease (A.L.S.) has gathered a truly spectacular ensemble cast (and director) to tell the the story of an unstable yet sexy vamp who brings together a handful of ex-lovers to a downtown Los Angeles bar to plot the ultimate revenge. This clever thriller with a twist and dashes of dark comedy is a must see not only for fans of the genre but also those for those of Katee Sackhoff (of Battlestar Galactica fame), Michelle Trachtenberg and the ubiquitous Seth Green. Recommended.

Not for me
This movie just bored me. Some woman calls her ex-lovers to a meeting and then plays some weird game with them. I just could not get into it.

I will say the characters were well played. The photography was reasonable for this sort of movie.

A quirky pleasure
I really liked this small film, it's throw back to film noir parody. I watch just about anything that Seth Green has done. This also came with a role for Michelle Trachtenberg, like a small BtVS reunion.

The Ultimate Versus

More Mayhem, Sly humor in this ultimate version of the cult classic...
I've waited for the official Region 1 release of this 3- disc Ultimate edition ever since I saw the Japanese region-2 release sans English subtitles. There are some wanna-be Ultimate editions made from Taiwan or Malaysia but they are not the Ultimate edition. I know the release date is listed as 3/27/2007, I got lucky and I bought mine a week earlier than this date.

VERSUS is a cult hit from the beginning. Ryuhei Kitamura's film has all the ingredients for stylish mayhem: Zombies, Guns & Gangsters, Samurai Swordplay, Slick humor, a cute chick, anime-like fantasy and mystery.
The story revolves around prisoner escapee KSC2-303(Tak Sakaguchi, from Shinobi, Death Trance, Azumi) stuck in the "Forest of Resurrection" to seek safe haven. Unfortunately, the crime lord supposed to grant him this has his own motives and he finds himself against a mysterious supernatural opponent to whom he is linked. This flick is a stylish relentless, rampaging zombie action-noir-horror hybrid...

Versus blu-ray: Definitely worth the wait.
Without going back and cleaning up the original negative, this is probably as good as Versus is ever going to look. I toggled between the original DVD release and the blu-ray, and there is a significant upgrade in crispness and detail, as well as a nice layer of grain during close shots and darker scenes. No visible DNR that I can detect. The image is progressive and not interlaced.

The audio is great as well, with added depth over the original DTS 5.1, and even the 6.1 mixes. Master audio makes a hell of a lot of difference.

As for the extras, it settles somewhere between the original director's cut release and the Ultimate Set in terms of quantity.

True fans of the film need to own the Versus Ultimate Edition and this blu-ray release. I prefer the original that's featured on the DVD, but the Ultimate Edition has more extras.

Definitely worth your money, if you are a fan of the film.

A rollercoaster ride of blood and guts
Welcome to the Forest of Resurrection, located somewhere in Japan. A brooding, oppressive place far from the view of prying eyes, the forest serves as a hiding place for many unsavory characters. Certain members of a yakuza gang bury their victims here. Escapees from nearby prisons melt away in its deep recesses. Sometimes these two elements meet, the yakuza and prison escapees, and all heck breaks loose. Maybe bloodshed in the Forest of Resurrection is a necessary event, part of a timeless struggle between the forces of good and evil. Maybe the most recent encounter between these prisoners and criminals is the result of some predestination of primordial origin beyond all human understanding. Whatever blood soaked events take place in the Forest of Resurrection, we are relatively certain it has something to do with the fact that this place is one of the 666 gateways to the underworld. The movie never informs us where the other 665 doorways are or what shenanigans go on there. Perhaps...

Father's Day

Violent and zany film gets good blu-ray release
Ahhh, Father's Day...where to begin? The violence. The butt rape. Revenge. Demons. Strippers with chainsaws. Maple syrup. Tasty berries. A sexy priest. A gay prostitute. Did I mention the stripper with the chainsaw?

Father's Day is a wild, violent, sometimes trippy, sometimes old-school, always fun little flick best viewed at night (the film even opens with a commercial telling you you're watching it late at night, a midnight movie so to speak) and with a group of friends who are ready to laugh.

Boy watches father raped and killed, gets eye cut out, grows up, wants revenge, kills wrong person, goes to prison, 10 years later is let out, seeks peace in the woods. That's only the first 5 minutes! What happens next will please fans of other Troma releases, as well as fans of "Hobo With A Shotgun" and "Planet Terror", two other films that are a little more well-known but equally as good.

The film gets even crazier when our group of heroes go to hell,...

Wow, this movie is nuts.
The guys who made this are clearly insane. Violent, weird, and funny, this is everything you want in 90 minutes of escapism. Highly recommended!!!

Father's Day ???
Yep Father's Day from the twisted minds of Astron 6 & Troma don't think you can get much more twisted than that come a warped flick about a "Father's Day" killer. This group will take you on one wild ride. This set is great comes with movie on Blu-Ray & DVD with DVD loaded with extras and CD Soundtrack of film which is pretty cool.
